History of Findochty Methodist Church
The following is taken from the Minute of the Circuit Meeting of the 21st September 1996 at which Rev Malcolm Newman, the then minister, gave an outline of the up-to-date situation of the church that the Members were sitting in :-
'The original settlers of Findochty had come from along the coast at Fraserburgh. In the midst of a devastating World War came the great news of the opening of yet another new church on 'the Coast', this time in the recently created new burgh of Findochty. The congregation had originally worshipped further down the hill but the building we were sitting in was opened on the 24th March 1916 and would be celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Malcolm gave details of the church's opening festivities and pointed out the fact that the church is built in the shape of a cross. In the words of the Superintendent at the time 'it was good for Scotland to have a little Methodism to stiffen up the other churches'.
Malcolm gives thanks with his current congregation of about 25 to 30, for the determination and foresight of those Christians who took the step to develop the present site and to create a stirring landmark for the community. Methodism in Scotland is 'still small' but it has and still does make its mark, and Findochty Methodist Church is no mean example.
The present membership and friends celebrated their 80th anniversary with a 'Soiree' in the church on Saturday, 23rd March 1996. Entertainment was led by members of the congregation as well as friends from other churches along the coast. Sunday, the Anniversary Day, saw services at 11am and 6pm led by the Minister. The evening Act of Worship was one of praise and thanksgiving, whilst the morning meeting was reflective and full of hope and anticipation.
